the story of chalk house
the story begins in a yard near the Brisbane airport in 2013. Here jez clark and his late husband mark granger picked out the old 1911 workers cottage that would become their new home and studio.
"we really wanted to upcycle a vintage Queenslander and work with a piece of local heritage, breathing new life into the building and creating a home tailored to modern living'.
The house was relocated, restored and extended into what you see now. Over the next few years jez devloped the gardens that now frame the building and cover about one acre of the three acre site.
"We wanted to provide a really australian setting for chalk house, one that evoked the australian bush and would provide a haven for birdlife and a showcase for the myriad of great aussie shrubs".
What's in a name?
The original cottage once stood on Chalk street in the brisbane suburb of lutwych. the exterior of the house is black, so we felt that chalk house was a fitting name.

the native garden
the main gardens are landscaped using only a broad mix of native australian plants and shrubs. there are over twenty varieties of grevillea as well as banksias, native grasses and neatly trimmed westringias and casuarinas.
The garden is a haven for native birdlife and provides a beautiful setting to the house.

jez has been developing the perennial garden since 2019, experimenting with a mix of flowering plants and ornamental grasses to create a tapestry of colour and texture through the seasons.
